The city of Peterborough is embracing creativity with the launch of a new street art trail, designed to breathe life back into its town center. This initiative, led by Peterborough Positive, aims to attract visitors and celebrate local artistry.

A Trail of Artworks

The new street art map highlights 15 stunning murals scattered across the city, featuring prominent works such as the Cowgate mural and the Unity Hands piece. Notably, six of these vibrant artworks have been commissioned by the business improvement district (BID). The project also offers free guided tours, allowing locals and visitors to delve into the inspiration and stories behind each piece, directly from the artists themselves.

Pep Cipriano, the chief operating officer at Peterborough Positive, emphasizes the importance of street art in shaping the identity of the city. He states, "Any trail brings people into the city centre – especially one focused on art and creativity, which always attracts more visitors." The initial response has been overwhelmingly positive, with all 2,000 printed maps quickly distributed, indicating a strong interest in this artistic journey.

Local residents have shared mixed reactions about the street art's potential impact on the city. While some, like Debbie Smith, express concerns that the art alone may not suffice to revitalize the area, others, such as Jackie Wilmot, find the murals to be uplifting and engaging, suggesting that more art would draw even more visitors.
