Amazing Community Support: Alexandria Women for Good Empowers Students with Funding

In a heartening display of community support, the Alexandria Women for Good (AWFG) recently presented a generous grant of $13,973 to the Alexandria Tutoring Consortium. This funding, revealed during a ceremonial “big check” presentation on April 30, is set to enhance tutoring and literacy support for students across Alexandria.

Transforming Lives Through Literacy

The grant was made possible through AWFG’s innovative “Gather & Grant” process, wherein members collectively nominate and vote on deserving local nonprofits. Eleanor Trice, a dedicated member who volunteers with ATC’s Book Buddies reading program, played a pivotal role in the consortium's nomination, demonstrating firsthand how critical literacy education is in shaping young students' futures.

“I love watching my students grow—building confidence while benefiting from the evidence-based tutoring methods used in ATC’s Book Buddies program,” Trice shared, expressing her excitement about the grant's potential. With this funding, ATC will be able to distribute more books and extend its outreach to even more students this summer, further enhancing the educational landscape of the community.

Impact on Local Schools

According to the Alexandria Tutoring Consortium, the initiative currently employs volunteer tutors who work with approximately 300 students in all 14 public elementary schools in Alexandria. These devoted volunteers are instrumental in helping struggling readers cultivate essential literacy skills, ultimately impacting their confidence and academic success.

Mary Ann Solomon, an ATC board member, remarked, “We’re kind of like the little engine that could,” highlighting the incredible dedication of volunteers as they aid in the educational journeys of local children. The recent grant has further motivated the organization, allowing them to expand their reach and increase their positive impact on the community.

Joining Forces for a Greater Cause

Alexandria Women for Good is not only focused on granting funds; it actively promotes community building through networking events, philanthropy, and volunteer opportunities. As they aim for a $15,000 fundraising goal for their next grant cycle, AWFG is continuously inviting more women to become a part of their inspiring giving circle.

Women interested in contributing to this uplifting mission can attend the next Gather & Grant event on May 7 at Founders Hall in Old Town Alexandria. This gathering promises to be an enriching experience for those looking to connect with fellow community members and learn about the impactful work being done by nonprofits in the area.

This initiative underscores the power of community collaboration in fostering educational opportunities and uplifting the lives of young learners in Alexandria. With continued support and participation from local residents, the future looks bright for both the children and the community as a whole.
