A Night to Remember: Community Celebrates Cricket in the Depths of Winter
In an uplifting gathering that showcased community spirit, over 40 cricket enthusiasts came together for a social evening organized by the Weston Super Mare SCCC Area at the Red Cow in Brent Knoll. This event brought joy and camaraderie to winter as members discussed their passion for the sport and looked forward to the upcoming cricket season.
Inspiring Leadership and Legacy
The evening was illuminated by the presence of special guest speakers, including Somerset’s two captains, Sophie Luff and Lewis Gregory. Their insights into the sport and their experiences resonated with the attendees, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose. Not to be missed, former Somerset captain Brian Rose shared the remarkable achievements of the team during what is fondly known as the "Glory Years." His anecdotes and knowledge offered attendees a nostalgic glimpse into the proud history of Somerset cricket.
Supporting Future Generations
A highlight of the evening was the auction and draw held to support Lewis Gregory's testimonial fund, underscoring the community's commitment to its players. The proceeds will assist Gregory in celebrating his career while giving back to the club. Additionally, the event culminated in a generous donation of cricket kits to Lympsham & Belvedere CC for their youth teams. This gesture, made possible by funds from the old Weston Area Committee and support from Somerset County Sports, demonstrates an investment in the future of the sport.
Stephen Southwell, who organized the event, remarked on its success, emphasizing the joy generated by reconnecting over the shared love of cricket. As the community rallies together, the excitement for the new season is palpable, marking a hopeful end to winter and a warm welcome to spring cricket.
