A New Dawn for Black Health Research: The Launch of the Black Health Researchers' Hub
The official opening of the Black Health Researchers' Hub (BHRH) on February 24, 2026, marks an inspiring milestone in health research and community engagement at Dalhousie University. This momentous event was celebrated with traditional drumming, a libation to ancestors, and a series of motivating speeches, highlighting the importance of cultural representation in health research.
Support from Academic Leaders
In attendance were key figures in the health faculties, including Drs. Brenda Merritt, David Anderson, and Ben Davis, who played significant roles in supporting the establishment of the hub. They extended their congratulations to co-leaders Dr. OmniSoore Dryden and Dr. Barbara Hamilton-Hinch, acknowledging their tireless efforts to bring the vision of the hub to fruition.
A Unique Space for Collaboration
The BHRH is designed to provide a culturally safe environment for researchers focused on unique health issues affecting the Black community. Dr. Ben Davis emphasized the mantra that "oral health is health," and expressed hope that this hub would address oral health disparities faced by African Nova Scotians, particularly in terms of access to care.
A Positive Impact on the Community
As Dr. Davis noted, the establishment of the BHRH represents "good news for the health professions at Dalhousie, good news for Black health researchers, and great news for our Black community members." The hub is poised to become a cornerstone for advancing health research that directly benefits the community it serves, fostering collaboration and innovation in addressing pressing health challenges.
