A New Artistic Journey: Empowering Young Minds Through Creativity

The University of Reading is making significant strides in bridging the gap between art and education. The institution has recently appointed Anurita Chandola as its new Artist in Residence, whose innovative approach focuses on space travel and imagined futures. This unique residency is dedicated to making the University’s extensive art collection accessible to underrepresented pupils at a local secondary school.

An Initiative for Inclusivity

Anurita's residency aims to engage Maiden Erlegh School students over the course of three years, leading workshops that dive into the University’s historic drawings collection, which features works by renowned artists such as Rubens and Sickert. Funded by a grant from the Group for Education in Museums and the Worshipful Company of Art Scholars, the initiative emphasizes the theme of 'drawing diversity', aiming to highlight stories that have often gone unheard within traditional art history.

Fostering Creative Careers

Through these workshops, students will enhance their observational, creative, and critical thinking skills. A pivotal goal of this project is to introduce students to various creative professions, including those of artists, curators, and museum professionals — roles that they may not have previously considered as attainable. As a culmination of their learning experience, students will curate an exhibition of their own artwork inspired by the University's collection in the final year of the residency.
