A Joyous Reunion: NICU Families Celebrate Resilience and Hope
This past Saturday, families who had children treated in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at St. Charles Bend came together for a heartwarming reunion event. The gathering served not only as a celebration of the progress of the young patients but also as an opportunity for parents, children, and medical staff to connect and reflect on their shared experiences during challenging times.
Strength in Community
Attendees included parents, children, nurses, and doctors, all forming a community bound by their experiences in the NICU. One parent, Matt Skarzynski, underscored the importance of such events by stating, "Getting to be here and celebrate with other families who can understand what that experience is like is just really important to us." His daughter, Angie, was born prematurely, weighing just one pound and nine ounces, and spent nearly four months in the NICU.
A Celebration of Life and Hope
The reunion was filled with various engaging activities such as a bounce house, face painting, and balloon artistry, creating a festive atmosphere amidst the reflections on their journeys. NICU Nurse Heather Bristol remarked on the profound nature of her work, stating, "There's so much hope and new life, no matter what that life weighs." This sentiment was echoed by Dr. Patrick Lewallen, the NICU Medical Director, who expressed joy in witnessing children thrive post-treatment, stating, "It's super impactful to see them running around and playing and parents saying they're doing great; it's just the best news in the world."
Remembering the Journey
While the event was largely celebratory, there were moments of reflection as well. A dedicated table honored NICU babies who did not survive, serving as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life. Parent Angel Speranza emphasized the invaluable local medical resources available, portraying gratitude for the experienced NICU team. “Just how incredible of a resource it is that we have locally... if they do need it, they're in very good hands,” she stated.
This reunion not only highlighted the incredible medical care provided but also strengthened the bonds formed through shared experiences, creating a resilient support network among families who continue to navigate the complexities of parenting children with health challenges.
