A Heartfelt Tribute: Central Texas Honors Music Advocate Thomas "Top" Clark
This past Sunday, the community of Hewitt, Texas came together to celebrate the life and legacy of Thomas “Top” Clark, a significant figure in the local music scene who passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. The event, held at VFW Post 6008, served not only as a memorial for Clark but also as a benefit to support his wife, Tamra.
A Lasting Impact on Local Music
Thomas "Top" Clark was more than just a music promoter; he was a pillar of the Central Texas music community. His dedication to promoting live music and supporting local musicians earned him admiration and respect from many. James Stone, the current president of the Music Association of Central Texas (MACT), highlighted Clark's role in revitalizing the organization during challenging times. “Really, if he hadn’t been around there wouldn’t be a music association anymore,” Stone reflected.
Giving Back to Veterans Through Music
One of Clark's notable initiatives was founding Guitars for Vets, an organization aimed at assisting veterans suffering from PTSD. Close friend Bruce Byars detailed how Clark provided guitars to veterans after they completed music lessons taught by volunteers. This program not only helped veterans channel their emotions through music but also gave them a sense of community and belonging.
Community Comes Together in Mourning and Celebration
Shortly after Clark's passing, friends and community members rallied together to organize the memorial. Sandy Shofner, one of the main organizers, expressed their desire to also support Tamra through silent auctions, BBQ sales, and T-shirt fundraising. The gathering featured live musical performances, showcasing the very musicians who benefitted from Clark's unwavering support throughout his life.
A Celebration of Friendship
The sentiments shared at the memorial emphasized a sense of gratitude for having known Clark. “We are celebrating today that we all got to be friends with Top, and we’re blessed to have known him,” Stone concluded, capturing the essence of the night, which was marked by love, respect, and a commitment to continue Clark's legacy.
