A Glimpse of Hope: Community-Centered Construction Project Wins National Award
A North East housing development named Benwell Dene has recently captured national attention, winning the "Most Improved Winner" title at the 2026 Considerate Constructors Scheme National Site Awards. This accolade acknowledges the commendable efforts of Lovell, the construction partner, in fostering a positive relationship with the local community.
Building Bridges with the Community
Located in Newcastle's West End, the Benwell Dene scheme has made significant strides since its inception 18 months ago. Darren Glennie, head of construction for Lovell in the North East, emphasized the importance of being a "good neighbour" right from the start. This initiative has not only focused on constructing homes but has also prioritized community engagement.
The construction team has actively collaborated with local schools, providing students with valuable insights into safety around building sites and empowering them to design educational safety posters. Such initiatives not only serve to educate young minds but also integrate the construction project into the fabric of the community.
Commitment to Quality of Life
Moreover, Lovell’s dedication to enhancing the community extends beyond mere construction. The company has partnered with Healthworks, a charity focused on health improvement, to upgrade The Lemington Centre’s garden, making it a more enjoyable and accessible space for residents. This highlights how construction firms can play a vital role in enriching local environments.
The development will soon deliver 146 homes for private rent, addressing housing needs in the area. Currently, 120 homes are under construction, with work on additional units commencing in the near future. Lovell has ensured that communication with local residents remains a priority, minimizing disruption through transparent updates about site activities.
A Future-Focused Approach
Furthermore, Lovell’s initiative includes a work experience programme, which provides aspiring construction professionals opportunities to gain practical experience on-site. This commitment not only fosters local talent but also showcases a holistic approach to development—one that considers social responsibility alongside housing needs.
As Don Anderson, managing director for Lovell in the North East, stated, "To win a national award requires the most exemplary efforts... to make sure they are having a positive impact on the world around them." The Benwell Dene project exemplifies how modern construction practices can intertwine with community welfare to create a more integrated and supportive environment.
