A Community-Driven Café Opens in Nelson, Sparking Connection

A new hub for community engagement has opened its doors in Nelson, bringing with it a spirit of connection and support. The Locals Café, operated from a repurposed shipping container situated in the car park of the All Saints Anglican Church, aims to serve as a gathering place for locals.

Inspiring Beginnings

Beth and Nick Schryvers, the owners of Locals Café, officially opened their café last week. This initiative is particularly special as it utilizes the original shipping container from Christchurch’s Kairos Food Rescue, a project founded by Beth Schryvers in 2018. The couple’s commitment to fostering community ties is evident in their approach and philosophy regarding the new café.

Community Support and Engagement

Their endeavor has garnered remarkable support from the church community, with 113 members contributing to raise $340,000 within just ten days to secure the land for the café. This outpouring of support speaks volumes about the desire of the community to create a welcoming space for all. Vicar Tim Bustin expressed that this initiative aligns beautifully with the church's vision of being "for the good of the city," stating, “Some people will never come into a church, but this gives us an opportunity to engage and encounter the community.”

A Bright Future Ahead

The Schryvers not only plan to operate Locals Café but are also exploring the possibility of bringing more shipping containers to the site to accommodate other businesses and non-profit organizations that align with their community-focused values. This model of cooperative support and shared resources reflects a growing trend in community engagement and social entrepreneurship.

With the opening of Locals Café, the residents of Nelson are not just gaining a new place to enjoy coffee but also an opportunity to connect, collaborate, and enhance the community spirit that binds them together.
