A Celebration of Community Spirit: The Lambeth Civic Awards Illuminate Local Heroes
The Lambeth Civic Awards celebrated the outstanding contributions of community groups and individuals at a heartwarming ceremony held at the Town Hall on Tuesday evening. This annual event, organized by Lambeth Council, showcased the exceptional work being done in the borough, highlighting the spirit of community that thrives in Lambeth.
A Night of Recognition
At this year's ceremony, seven different awards were presented, including the prestigious Mayor’s Award and the Social Enterprise Award. Cllr Claire Holland, Leader of Lambeth Council, expressed her pride in the awardees, stating, “This year’s Lambeth Civic Awards were a brilliant celebration of everything that is great about Lambeth." The event underscored the significance of recognizing individuals and groups for their hard work and dedication to improving the borough.
Inspiring Stories and Community Engagement
Cllr Donatus Anyanwu, Lambeth’s Cabinet Member for Stronger Communities, Leisure, and Sport, reflected on the inspiring stories that emerged from the nominations. With 280 nominees who contributed significantly to the community, the ceremony not only recognized winners but also celebrated the collective effort of all nominated individuals and organizations. “It’s such a great chance to celebrate all the amazing work that people do for Lambeth,” he remarked.
Acknowledging the Award Winners
This year’s winners included: Djed Khan-Warsop, who received the Mayor’s Award for Volunteer & Community Champion; Myatt’s Fields Park Project for the Climate and Green Spaces Award; Dr. Ron Dodzro for the Safer Lambeth Award; The Boury Academy for the Arts and Cultural Heritage Award; Helping Hands Collective CIC for the Social Enterprise Award; and the Healthcare Team HMP Brixton for the Health & Wellbeing Award. Additionally, MINDHEART Creative Therapies CIC received the Empowering Young People Award.
Community Support Initiatives
Beyond the awards, the event also emphasized community initiatives, including the introduction of a ‘Safe Hub’ on Windrush Square, which offers practical support for individuals in need. It demonstrates a concerted effort by the council to enhance community safety and well-being.
