A Brave New Journey: Kim Lam's Hope for a Second Chance at Life

Aberdeen resident Kim Lam is living proof that hope can flourish even in the direst of circumstances. At just 39 years old, she is on the verge of receiving a double lung transplant that she believes could transform her life. Diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) at the age of 28, Kim's vibrant lifestyle was abruptly interrupted as she transitioned from leading a fulfilling life in London to battling a debilitating health condition.

Facing Adversity with Courage

For over a decade, Kim endured severe health challenges that forced her to adapt in ways she never anticipated. From experiencing life-threatening oxygen instability to relying on supplemental oxygen, it seemed that her aspirations had been put on indefinite hold. Despite this, Kim's outlook remained resolute. “I think it’s better to be hopeful and optimistic than overly scared or fearful because why not?” she says, reflecting her courageous spirit.

A New Hope

Her journey to the transplant list has not been easy. Following a tumultuous 2024, during which her health declined dramatically, Kim saw an urgent need to embrace the possibility of a lung transplant. As her consultant and loved ones rallied around her, the reality of her situation urged her to take proactive steps towards recovery. “Eventually, I saw it as a blessing and a potential second chance of life,” she shares, emphasizing the importance of living in the present and appreciating each moment.

Raising Awareness and Empowering Others

In addition to preparing for the transformative procedure, Kim has dedicated herself to raising awareness about chronic illnesses. As a new member of Asthma + Lung UK Scotland’s patient panel, she is guiding charity policy while also sharing her personal experiences through her website, lungevity.co.uk. Her advocacy not only empowers others facing similar challenges but also normalizes conversation around lung health.

With World Transplant Day approaching, Kim's story is a heartwarming reminder of the resilience of the human spirit. As she awaits her transplant, she looks forward to reclaiming the activities she once loved, from hiking up Munros to simply enjoying life without the struggle of breathlessness. Her journey encapsulates courage, hope, and the promise of new beginnings.
