A Blueprint for Community Success: How a Housing Development is Making Waves
A recent accolade has highlighted the remarkable contributions of a housing development in Newcastle's West End, showcasing the power of community-first construction. The Benwell Dene scheme, developed by Lovell, has been honored as the "Most Improved Winner" at the 2026 Considerate Constructors Scheme National Site Awards, underscoring its commitment to being a "good neighbour" in the local community.
Building More Than Just Homes
The Benwell Dene project, which aims to provide 146 homes for private rent, has become a focal point for positive community engagement. Darren Glennie, head of construction for Lovell in the North East, emphasized that establishing a connection with the community has been a top priority since the project's inception 18 months ago. The initiative not only aims to provide housing but also strives to foster relationships with local institutions, such as Bridgewater School.
Empowering Local Youth
In a bid to raise awareness about safety around construction sites, Lovell has collaborated with children from Bridgewater School, allowing students to contribute by designing safety posters. This partnership serves as an excellent introduction to the workforce for these young minds, nurturing a sense of responsibility and engagement in their environment.
A Commitment to Community Health
Beyond safety, Lovell’s efforts extend into the realm of health and well-being. The construction firm has partnered with Healthworks, a charity focused on health improvement across the North East, to transform the garden at The Lemington Centre into a more inviting space. Such initiatives reinforce Lovell’s commitment to enhancing the living conditions and overall quality of life in Newcastle's West End.
Transparent Communication and Respect for Neighbours
Regular communication with local residents has been another cornerstone of this project. Lovell has prioritized informing the community about construction activities, mitigating any potential disruptions, and ensuring that real estate development respects the existing community fabric. Mr. Glennie stated, "By ensuring everyone is aware of what is happening and when, and keeping the community safe, we can minimize any inconvenience."
Looking Ahead
With 120 homes currently being developed and more to come, Lovell demonstrates that responsible construction can go hand-in-hand with community engagement. The accolades received by the Benwell Dene project serve as a reminder of the positive impact that thoughtful development can have when it prioritizes both people and place.
